Artefact Wines

The Artefact collection is a unique range of small batch artisan wines, made only in the finest years and produced in limited volumes. These collections are remarkable for various reasons, whether based on exceptional harvests, innovative wine making techniques, or creative blends.

Our Artefact range is a playground of experimentation, celebrating the ingenuity of our winemakers. To reflect this creativity, each Artefact wine is adorned with a new commissioned artwork from a contemporary artist that reflects its individual qualities.

The art that remains on site remains as a memory - an Artefact - of the wine once the limited-release has been sold and enjoyed.

We have collaborated with five contemporary artists to date, with our most recent partnership emerging from The Artefact Prize, developed in collaboration with The Sussex Contemporary. This initiative awards the design of an upcoming Artefact wine to an artist selected from their annual The Sussex Open Call exhibition.

Artefacts #11 and #12 were created by artist Rosie Mortimer following the first year of this partnership, and Artefact #13 will be designed by the 2025 prize winner, Katharine Rabson Stark.

Makers’ Markets at Artelium

Artelium hosts two seasonal Makers’ Markets each year—one in early spring and a Christmas edition at the start of the festive season.

These events bring together a carefully curated community of makers, producers, and artisans, offering a contemporary showcase of local craft and produce from across Sussex. It’s the perfect opportunity to discover unique, one-of-a-kind pieces, all handmade with care and creativity.

Keep an eye on our What’s On page for details of upcoming Makers’ Markets.

Judith Alder: Artist in Residence

Judith Alder works across a range of media, exploring how ideas and materials grow and evolve over time. Her practice is rooted in a curiosity about the intersections of science, nature, and technology, and how these forces shape our understanding of the world. Works are continually revisited, revised, and adapted, forming part of an ongoing process through which she investigates where we come from and what we are made of.

A long-standing collaborator with Artelium, Judith has contributed to multiple exhibitions over the years and is the artist behind the labels for the core still wine range. Her work forms an important part of the estate’s permanent collection, with pieces on view in the tasting room. We are also delighted to offer a selection of her works for purchase through our website.

A Growing Sculpture Garden

Artelium is home to a growing collection of large-scale outdoor sculptures, all of which can be enjoyed by visitors as they explore the estate.

Each work has been specially commissioned as part of an Artefact collaboration, created in response to a specific Artefact wine and reflecting the character of its final label. Together, these sculptures form an evolving dialogue between art, landscape, and winemaking.

Current installations include:

  • Wood, Earth Hoop by Walter Bailey (Artefact #6), situated below the lower terrace

  • Futures, Past by Will Nash (Artefact #4 & #5), located at the end of the first field, en route to the first vineyard

  • Surface, Edge, Shadow by Rosie Mortimer (Artefact #11 & #12), positioned on either side of the path leading towards the first vineyard

As the collection continues to expand, so too does Artelium’s commitment to creating a unique intersection of contemporary art and English wine.

Exhibitions & Permanent Collection

Artelium hosts exhibitions across the estate, often celebrating recent Artefact collaborations. Visitors can explore past exhibitions via the link below.

The estate is also home to a growing permanent collection, from small interior works to large outdoor sculptures. A rotating selection of works from the collection are on display in the estate’s tasting room year round, offering visitors an ever-evolving experience of art alongside wine.

Skelton Workshops
