THE VINEYARDS
The Vineyards of Artelium
Artelium is proud to farm two vineyard sites in Sussex, planted with a range of classic and hybrid grape varieties. Across 65 acres, we grow over 125,000 vines, focusing on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Gris. We also cultivate PiWi (fungus-resistant) varieties as part of our commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Madehurst Vineyard – Chalk Soils in the South Downs
Our largest site is the Madehurst Vineyard, located within the South Downs National Park. This 45-acre chalk-rich site is home to more than 85,000 vines, planted in 2019 and 2020. It is also where our winery is located, producing its first vintage in 2022. The chalk terroir is ideal for crafting premium sparkling wines.
Streat Vineyard – Clay Soils and Cellar Door Experience
Located between Ditchling and Plumpton, the Streat Vineyard spans 20 acres of clay soil and hosts around 40,000 vines. This site mirrors the varietal and clonal diversity of Madehurst, offering contrast in growing conditions. Streat is also home to our Cellar Door, open Thursday to Sunday year-round. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, vineyard tours, and exceptional hospitality while taking in the panoramic views of the South Downs.
Clonal Diversity and Innovation
We use a mix of Champagne clones (ideal for sparkling wines), Burgundian, and Alsace clones (for still wines) across both vineyards. This approach allows our winemakers to craft expressive wines that reflect the character of each site.
As part of our sustainability mission, we have planted over 17,000 PiWi vines, including Souvignier Gris, Sauvignac, Rinot, Pinotin, Caberet Noir, and Divico. These resilient, hybrid varieties offer natural disease resistance and the potential for crafting distinctive, low-intervention wines.
