Meet the Artist: Judith Alder

Judith graduated from the University of Brighton in 2003 with a BA in Fine Art and alongside her artistic practice, co-founded Blue Monkey Studio in Eastbourne with three other mature arts graduates, later establishing Blue Monkey Network, an artists’ development organisation in partnership with the Towner Art Gallery. Judith lives in East Sussex and is a member of Eastbourne’s Culture Group and team member of Full Frontal Eastbourne, advocating for art and artists in Eastbourne and beyond. In her 20 years as an artist, she has initiated and managed numerous artist led projects, primarily in Sussex, working with arts organisations, galleries, universities, schools and museums, and collaborating with scientists, geologists, ethicists and academics to develop the research which informs her work. In 2010 she undertook MA Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art and her work has been widely exhibited.

During the lockdown in April 2021, Judith created ‘30 works in 30 days’ as part of an international project. Each created within strict parameters of black ink on white paper with a continuous looped line. After the thirty days were up, Judith continued to draw, adding to the body of work beyond the project.

Judith’s work spans a range of media and reflects her interest in how this grow and evolve over time, and in particular how science, nature and technology collide in today’s world. Work’s are revisited, revised and adapted to reflect changes in ideas and understanding. A keen collaborator she partners with universities, scientists, ethicists and other creative people both for her research as well as the creation of works.

Judith graduated from the University of Brighton with BA in Fine Art and subsequently undertook an MA in Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art, since when her work has been widely exhibited. She is a active member of the arts community in Sussex, in particular, in her home-town of Eastbourne where she is a member of Eastbourne’s Culture Club and the Full Frontal Eastbourne, an art and artist advocay group. In addition, Judith co-founded Blue Monkey Studio in Eastbourne and Blue Monkey Network, an artists’ development community.
